Before you measure
Finger size changes with temperature, time of day, activity and fluid retention. Measure when your hands feel comfortable—not very cold, hot or swollen. Repeat the measurement on two or three occasions and use the finger on which the ring will actually be worn.
A ring must pass over the knuckle but sit securely at the base of the finger. Wider bands often feel tighter than slim bands, so design affects the final fit.
Method one: measure a ring that fits
Choose a ring worn on the correct finger. Measure the inside diameter straight across the centre, from inner edge to inner edge, in millimetres. Do not include the metal. Compare that number with the brand’s ring size chart.
For better accuracy, place the ring over a printed sizing guide only if the guide has been printed at 100% scale and its calibration line measures correctly.
Method two: measure your finger
Wrap a non-stretch strip of paper around the widest part of the finger. Mark where the ends meet, lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres. That length is the approximate inner circumference. Repeat without pulling tightly.
String can stretch and soft measuring tape can shift, so treat this as an estimate. If your result falls between sizes, consider the knuckle, band width and whether your fingers tend to swell.
When to ask for professional help
For an engagement ring, an eternity-style band, a wide band or a surprise purchase, professional sizing is worth the extra step. Some designs are difficult to resize after production. Confirm the resizing policy before ordering and avoid assuming that every ring can be altered.
For a surprise, borrow a ring from the correct finger briefly or ask a trusted friend to help. A thoughtful estimate plus a clear resizing plan is better than trying to force certainty from one home measurement.
Frequently asked questions
What time of day should I measure?
Later in the day is often useful, but repeat at different times when your hands are at a normal temperature.
Should a ring feel tight?
It should pass the knuckle with gentle resistance and sit securely without pinching.
What if I am between sizes?
Consider band width and swelling, then ask the jeweller which size is safer for that exact design.
