What the report does
An independent grading report records the identifying and quality characteristics of a specific diamond. Depending on the report type, it may state laboratory-grown origin, growth process, measurements, carat weight, colour, clarity, finish and other observations.
The report is not a guarantee of beauty, price appreciation or performance. It is a technical description that supports transparent comparison.
Start with identity and measurements
Confirm the report number and use IGI’s official verification service to match the record. Check the description and origin language, then compare the shape and millimetre measurements with the product listing.
Measurements help explain face-up presence. Two diamonds of equal carat weight may distribute weight differently, so length, width and depth are useful alongside carat.
Read the quality grades together
Review colour and clarity, but resist treating one grade as the whole story. For a round diamond, examine the cut grade where provided, plus polish and symmetry. For fancy shapes, proportions and visual evaluation become especially important because appearance can vary within the same grades.
Fluorescence describes a diamond’s response to ultraviolet light. It should be considered in context rather than assumed to be automatically good or bad. Comments may note growth characteristics, treatments or inscriptions.
Use the report as a decision tool
Compare the report with clear images or video and the finished setting. Ask whether the centre diamond’s report is included with the purchase and whether the report number can be verified before or after ordering.
Most importantly, make sure the paperwork matches the exact product. A credible report supports the purchase, but the final choice should also account for design, craftsmanship, aftercare and what you see with your own eyes.
